Pizza and Pottery Night – Brings Parents Together in Support of LGBTQIA+ Young People
On Tuesday, 25 February, The Encounter Community Centre in Victor Harbor came alive with creativity, conversation, and connection during a special Pizza and Pottery Night. The event was a collaborative effort between Headspace and Skylight Mental Health, funded through Skylight’s Community Connections Program.
Designed specifically for young people and parents of LGBTQIA+ individuals, the workshop focused on fostering community, sparking open conversations, and building supportive networks.
Six parents attended the evening and quickly immersed themselves in the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. While shaping and moulding their clay creations, the group shared personal experiences, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged in meaningful discussion around LGBTQIA+ topics. For many, it was a unique opportunity to connect with others navigating similar journeys — a reminder that they are not alone.
This workshop also marked an exciting step toward the relaunch of Headspace’s LGBTQIA+ social group, creating stronger foundations for ongoing peer support and community engagement.
The night wasn’t just about creativity and connection — there was also delicious pizza to enjoy, adding to the warmth and informality of the space.
Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive. The parents and facilitators alike expressed a strong desire to reconnect soon to reveal their ceramic bowls once they’ve completed their journey through the kiln.
Pizza, pottery, and powerful connections — a simple recipe that left a lasting impact.
