On Sunday, 12 November, Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga was transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration as the 2025 Adelaide Multicultural Festival took place. The free, family-friendly event showcased the incredible diversity of Adelaide, with over 75 community groups representing more than 55 cultures coming together to share their traditions through food, music, art, and performances.
Skylight Mental Health Community Development Officer, Chrissie Roberts, and two participants from the Community Connections Program attended the event. Together, they enjoyed exploring the festival, indulging in delicious dishes from around the world, and discovering services that support Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities. A standout moment for the group was the interactive turban wrapping activity, which highlighted the beauty and skill involved in this cultural tradition.
Strengthening Cultural Connections
Chrissie’s work with CALD communities goes beyond attending events like the festival. In September 2024, Skylight’s Community Connections Program supported Flor from the Philippines and YaHua from Taiwan to form the Fleurieu Culture Club (FCC). What began as a small gathering has quickly grown, now including members with links to India and Mauritius.
The group regularly meets to cook for one another, exchange recipes, and share stories about their diverse cultures. They’ve planned a Christmas outing to the Adelaide Central Markets, celebrating their connections and shared passion for food and culture.
Looking to the Future
For Flor and YaHua, their first experience at the Adelaide Multicultural Festival was a chance to strengthen their friendship and embrace the broader cultural community. They’ve come away inspired to host a cooking workshop in Goolwa or Victor Harbor next year and are even considering organising a small multicultural event in the Fleurieu Peninsula.
These ideas reflect the growing connections and enthusiasm among CALD communities, sparked by events like the festival.
Building Bridges Through Culture
The Adelaide Multicultural Festival is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of South Australia’s diverse communities. For Chrissie, Flor, YaHua, and the Fleurieu Culture Club, it’s a reminder of the power of connection and the importance of celebrating our differences.
As they look to the future, Skylight remains committed to supporting CALD communities, fostering inclusion, and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.
